Our Top 10 Beaches in Zanzibar

Exquisite powder white sand lapped by azure blue waters and fringed with palm trees rippling in the warm breeze; the beaches of Zanzibar are all stunning, but each has its own special character. This enchanting island in the Indian Ocean is where Africa and Arabia meet and if you’re lucky, you can catch one one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world. Ready for a little R &R? Here are our favorites beaches for an amazing winter resort holiday…

1. NUNGWI NORTH
Nungwi North will give you the best of both worlds. The north side is a tranquil oasis of gorgeous white sand where the sunset is unbe-lievably spectacular while laying in a hammock as time floats by.

2. PINGWE
Considered a secret gem and well off the beat-en track, take long walks on soft powder-white sand or swim in turquoise calm warm waters on this stunning beach located on the east, where there are less bars and resturaunts. At high tide, the beach is cutoff from the mainland, creating this location as the perfect place for a secluded and a peaceful getaway. Pingwe is also the loca-tion of the famed Rock Restuarant.

3. PAJE
A extremely popular place for kitesurfing is Paje beach, located on the southeast part of the island in the middle of Bwejuu and Jambiani Village. In addition, clear, warm waters home to thousands of colorful starfish, turtles, trumpet fish and moray eels make Paje beach one of the best scuba diving destinations in Zanzibar.

4. MATEMWE
The unruffled lagoon waters are home to the pristine coral reef of Mnemba Atoll. The reef attracts an incredible host of marine life, includ-ing numerous types of fish, dolphins and turtles. Experience the finest diving in Africa, or simply hire a guide to paddle you out to the reef for a spot of snorkelling.

5. JAMBIANI
A great place to watch Zanzibari fisherman, seaweed farmers and boatmen, hang out with locals at bars and restaurants or of course, relax on a beautiful stretch of soft white sand as you watch the local kids play a game of football.

6. KIWENGAWA BEACH
The tide has a major influence on this beach. During low tide is the best time for long walks. The soft white sand feels like talcum powder. You can walk for miles and miles. Kiwengawa beach is also known as Little Italy because of the many Italian hotels that line the beach front. Located on the northeast coast, some people call it the Maldives of Zanzibar because of its over the water bungalow villas, luxury resorts and hotels.

7. BJEWUU BEACH – MANGROVE SAFARI
Considered one of the best idealistic beaches in Zanzibar, this is one of the of the quietest parts for those seeking peace and relaxation. Located on the Southeast side of Zanzibar, the beach is lined with palm trees and a mangrove forest. Bjewuu is also only 30 minutes from Stonetown.

8. KENDWA
Kendwa beach is often referred to as the little sister of Nungwi beach. It is also known for its parties during the full moon a.k.a. Full Moon parties.

9. KIZIMKAZI MTENDENI
One activity Kizimkazi Beach is popular for, is its dolphin sightings. There are dolphin tours but our recommendation is Ethical Dolphon Tour offered by African Impact & Marine Project.

10. PONGWE
Arguably one of the best beaches in Zanzibar for swimming! Pongwe’s quiet beach has the classic palm tree decoration which is backed by dense vegetation. Make sure to bring your ham-mock to lounge your day away. Perhaps a fresh mango smoothie or cocktail in between after-noon naps? Relax and forget about returning to life for another week or so.
