South Africa Wine Country: Taste Your Way Thru The Cape

irst let me preface this article by saying that wine tasting in South Africa’s wine country (one of the best wine regions in the world), is something that I highly recommend.

From tasting rooms in Camps Bay to venturing out to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, to taking long walks with wine-in-hand at Klein Constantia or eating fresh caught seafood paired with sultry, tantalizing traditional African food with a chilled sparkling wine for dessert all while over looking the sea is by far an epic experience all around.

From the long, rich wine-making history that dates back to the 17th century South Africa is known for producing a wide variety of wines, including red and white varietals, sparkling wines, and fortified wines. The wine regions in South Africa are divided into two main areas: the Western Cape, which is located in the southwestern part of the country, and the Eastern Cape, which is located in the southeastern part of the country.

The Western Cape is home to the majority of South Africa’s wine production, and is home to several well-known wine regions, including Stellenbosch, Paarl, and Franschhoek. These regions are known for producing high-quality red wines, particularly those made from the Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage grapes.

The Eastern Cape is less well-known as a wine-producing region, but it is home to several wineries that produce a wide range of wines, including red, white, and sparkling wines. Some of the notable wineries in the Eastern Cape include Addo Elephant National Park, Graham Beck Wines, and The Goose Wines.

Other wine regions in South Africa include Durbanville, Constantia, Swartland, Robertson, Overberg, Elgin, Walker Bay, and many more. Each of these regions has its own unique characteristics, which are reflected in the wines that they produce.

South Africa is also known for its unique wine styles, such as Cape Blend, which is a blend of red grapes, such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinotage. Additionally, Chenin Blanc is one of the most widely planted white grape varietals in the country.

Here are some of my favorites in no particular order:

CONSTANTA GLEN
Located in South Africa’s oldest wine region, the vineyards are cradled between the Constantiaberg range and Table Mountain.

KLEIN CONSTANTA
One of my favorite places to visit because of the simple beauty of the grounds. It dates back to 1685 and described as one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates, Klein Constantia is set amidst ancient trees on the upper foothills of the Constantiaberg, with views across False Bay

DE LAIRE ESTATE
Delaire Graff Estate is the epitome of luxury and one of the most well-known wine estates in Stellenbosch. Its perfectly combined pairings of art, wine, food and luxury accommodations has created a botanical paradise that cannot be missed.
