Meson Panza Verde: A Serene Boutique Oasis

With its baroque architecture and thriving textile scene, this international destination city is a former colonial capital in Central America’s most beguiling destinations. From being surrounded by seven volcanoes (while one which is erupting on a consistent basis) to exploring colonial ruins throughout the city to visiting the famous Lake Atitlán located in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre mountain range or or even spending a couple of days at El Paredón (about 2 hours outside Antigua) one can see why Antigua is an international destination vacation. However the question is.. where are some of the best places to stay that are hidden gems in Antigua that permeate comfort, artistry and luxury? If you’re looking for one of the best boutique luxury hotels in Antigua with luscious greenery, spacious rooms, an elegant Spanish style decor, a wonderful spa, exemplary food and even an art gallery, then Mesón Panza Verde is what you’re looking for. With more than three decades in business, Meson Panza Verde has continually grown as one of the sought after boutique hotels in Antigua. A five–minute walk from the main plaza, this convenient but quiet hotel is a great choice. Located on a quiet stretch of bustling Fifth Avenue, this boutique property — opened in 1986 as the first luxury hotel in Antigua — derives its name from panza verde, a term meaning “green belly” that Antigüeños once called themselves when locals subsisted on an overflowing bounty of avocados.

The bedrooms which sizes are more like suites, feature mahogany doors, antique chandeliers sourced from Cuba and floor-to-ceiling windows with unobstructed views of Volcán de Agua including french doors that open to their own personal verandas.

Meson Panza Verde also has been selected as a Fodor´s Choice Establishment. Their restaurant has received the coveted Medal de Oro (of Gold) award, which is the best in the country. It is well known for its fine cuisine and romantic ambiance. Dine in their elegant Main Salon with vaulted ceiling, amid fine wines and original paintings. Its reputation for “International Cuisine with a Twist” has made it a favorite for Guatemalans and international travelers alike. A second dining space is along the hotel’s lap pool, under stone arches, with candlelight bouncing off the water creating dramatic shadows. If you prefer, you can choose to be served on the corridor surrounding the main garden, on the terrace in romantic candle filled setting for two in the Cupula or in La Cueva, where live music is performed on certain nights of the week. One bar and lounge in this area joins another full bar near the lobby and entrance, both serving an international array of rum, whiskey, and wine.

When visiting Meson Panza Verde, it is like walking into a secluded hidden garden oasis with old world charms that is only enhanced with aged Spanish architecture, a warm atmosphere and friendly staff that seem to offer each guest the feeling of a one-on-one experience. This unique boutique hotel is by far one of the best in Antigua.
